Review: We love the name – and thankfully it doesn’t disappoint as a drink. It smells planty, florally and soapy – which you might not think sounds appetising, but this is a nice one. We don’t normally like lemongrass, but in this blend it’s balanced so well by the rose, while the cocoa shells give it an earthy flavour, so you don’t feel like you’re drinking kitchen cleaner or perfume. It’s a gorgeous combination, bright and vibrant, making it a perfect pick-me-up in the middle of the day.

Review: Another one from the fairytale collection. It has a very pleasant aroma, like being in the woods, with a fruity tartness. We could immediately imagine wild raspberry bushes. The flavour is like a mellowed green tea. It’s nice and fresh, and not bitter at all. However, for all that raspberry in the ingredients list, we couldn’t taste it. It’s not the fruitiest of teas, nor the most exciting. It’s just a nice green tea, for people who usually find green tea a bit too strong.

Review: We’ll preface this by saying we expected to hate it – but it didn’t turn out that way.

The smell is planty, but also overly sweet and artificial – disgusting, even – and you get a strange sense of ‘medicine’ from the inclusion of the eucalyptus. Thankfully, the actual flavour isn’t so bad. It’s quite sweet, but not as strong as we expected from a tea that lists liquorice as its main ingredient. As for the rest: we’re not sure why there are so many ingredients when you can hardly taste most of them. The main problem is that there’s a horrible aftertaste that really hangs around. This is no doubt due to the ‘flavouring’ (not even ‘natural’) listed in the ingredients. That aside…it’s alright. It’s a fairly generic fruity tea (surprisingly lacking hibiscus), with liquorice as a sweetener. It’s not for us, but we can imagine someone out there enjoying it.

We’d certainly pick it over Just Hibiscus or Foot Tea.

Review: Star Child tell us this blend is designed to invoke the blessings of the goddess of the land, or simply to help relax your mind in preparation for a moment of meditation.

The smell is earthy, largely from the fennel, with a lovely flowery aroma. It’s like being outside in a summertime garden – and just as colourful! The water goes a very bright blue, again from the violet, before it settles into a dark, rich tea colour. It’s rather beautiful to watch the transformation in your cup.

All that violet gives a mild, smooth, subtle floral flavour, over an underlying hint of aniseed – but it’s not too strong on either taste, which is great if you’re like us and don’t tend to like that sort of thing. It’s an unusual blend that is very pleasant to drink. It’s not too strong, and we think it’s perfect for after meals. We can definitely imagine this putting us in a calm, peaceful state of mind, helping us get away from the stresses of the day.

If you’ve not tried Star Child before and are unsure where to find them, there are plenty of online shops selling their tea range, including their official website www.starchild.co.uk. Or, if you happen to be passing through Glastonbury, pop into their beautiful shop on the high street for tea, incense, essential oils, fresh herbs, books and more. Their tea is extremely reasonably priced, as well, compared to many other loose leaf brands, especially when you consider that you can re-brew.

Review: When hot, it smells like neat cordial. When it cools down, you get the raspberry. It’s like it’s not sure if it’s herbal tea or a tisane.

The flavour is generic and bland. It’s your classic fruit tea, where it promises raspberry and all you get is tart hibiscus. It’s not bad but why bother? This flavour has been done so many times. There’s no way to make it interesting, unless you take out the overpowering hibiscus and actually try for a new taste in there.

The box says it’s great hot or iced. We didn’t try it iced, but we did find if you let it cool, you get a bit more fruit. The flavour disappears quickly, though – and maybe this sounds strange, but we found it quite boring to get through a whole cup.

Flavour: Relax

Caffeine Factor: Caffeine-free

Organic Ingredients: 100%

Price Range: £2-3

Bags Per Box: 17

Review: The smell is quite unpleasant…well, gross, in fact.  A bit like off, two-week-old rubbish, or a compost bin – basically, something a fly would eat.

We’re not in love with the flavour, either.  The barley malt is so strong, which is quite odd in combination with the other flavours (flavours you can’t really taste individually, and which don’t really mix well).  Perhaps you would like this if you enjoy a really malty taste but without the heaviness of traditional malt, but it’s not really for us.  The flavour also lingers in the back of your mouth, so if it’s not your thing, it’s hard to get rid of it.

Best time of year to drink this:  Really hard to say, because we’re not fans – but maybe some people would enjoy it in the colder months, when spices like cinnamon are traditionally used.

Best time of day to drink this: Yogi market this as a relaxation drink, so perhaps it would be best had in the evening.

Organic Ingredients: 100%

Review: As expected just from reading the ingredients list, this smells horribly artificial – like kitchen cleaning wipes.  The lemon and safflower petals are really strong, and not in a nice way.  It’s quite a disgusting aroma that does not inspire you to drink it.

But drink it we did – and it tasted just as artificial.  Yes, yes, a lot of it is natural ingredients, but there is also ‘flavouring’ in there, and you can really taste it.  Then, as it goes down your throat, it’s just so bitter.  And then, after swallowing, your senses are flooded with floral, to the point where you honestly feel like you’ve got a rose stuck up your nose.  We are not exaggerating.

That said, stick some ice in it and it magically becomes quite a nice summer drink.  It’s quite tart and less floral.  So you might like it as an iced tea – but you will never drink this one hot.

Review: This tea definitely lives up to its name.  The aroma is very tart, as you would expect – just like a crushed, ripe raspberry.  The taste does not disappoint: raspberry and hibiscus, yet only mildly tart (unlike some hibiscus teas you get), and with a mild sweetness, too.

Overall, this is a warming tea we recommend for cold autumn and winter months, either in the morning (to heat you up after you’ve come into work) or in the evening (after you’ve come home).  Drinking it makes you feel nice inside and out.

It’s also worth noting that raspberry leaf has long been used at the end of pregnancy, by women desperate to encourage labour.  It is thought that the leaf tones the muscles of your uterus – though it’s controversial, so be sure to do your own research, if this applies to you, and definitely avoid having lots of it in earlier stages of pregnancy.

Caffeine Factor: Caffeine-free

Organic Ingredients: 100%

Price Range: £7.50

Cups Per Box: 40 (approx.)

Review: First of all, this blend has such a misleading name.  It makes you expect a tart fruity drink – but raspberry leaves don’t taste anything like raspberries.

Just looking at this list of ingredients filled us with mild revulsion.  As expected from a lemongrass blend, it smells artificial, like Lemsip – never appetising.  And unfortunately, this is one that tastes just like it smells: unpleasantly medicinal and fake.

We can’t really taste the other ingredients.  There’s a mild sharpness (if you can imagine such a thing) in the back of the throat, perhaps from the raspberry leaves; and the mint cools and opens up the mouth.  That’s about it.  And it’s strangely dehydrating.  We can’t imagine why anyone would drink this, unless they really liked lemongrass.  But then, there are much cheaper options on the market.

Best time of year to drink this: Spring, perhaps – only because of all the flowers and fruits

Best time of day to drink this: Afternoon, possibly – but we can’t think why you’d do that to yourself…unless you had a cold and wanted a substitute for Lemsip

Review: The back of the box translates the name into German (Frauen Power) and French (La Femme Active).  All we could think was, Girl power!

All the ingredients are traditionally used to treat women’s health issues – although we have come across warnings in internet forums that say you shouldn’t have too much of this tea, because it could lead to a headache.  On the other hand, apparently it is actually quite an aphrodisiac, when drunk in large quantities.  We can’t vouch for this, ourselves!

What makes this tea stand out is that rather than overpowering the blend with rose (like so many other women’s teas), the primary ingredient is hibiscus.  It means that while this tea does have a floral aroma, it doesn’t taste of perfume.  So if you’re like Three Tulsi and don’t like that strong rose flavour, this makes for a great alternative.  It’s also just sweet enough to stave off those hormonal sugar cravings, and the black pepper gives it a bit of a kick in the back of the throat.  Warm and wakeful, this tea also makes for a great morning pick-me-up.

Best time of year to drink this: Any time you’re feeling a bit hormonal.

Best time of day to drink this: Mornings, to get your day started.
